Aussi Van Ostaijen a-t-il \u00e9crit \u00e0 propos de\u00a0<em>De pottendraaier<\/em> (Le potier)\u00a0que le cube y \u00e9tait devenu la forme fondamentale de toute chose. Chez Jespers, la silhouette et la t\u00eate demeurent intactes, tandis que le cube, la sph\u00e8re ou l\u2019ovale conf\u00e8rent \u00e0 la sculpture une solide consistance. Ceci vaudra pour toutes les sculptures des ann\u00e9es vingt ayant une certaine importance artistique. Le jongleur, par exemple,\u00a0a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u \u00e0 partir de deux formes cylindriques. Le jongleur ou le personnage issu du monde du cirque \u00e9tait alors un th\u00e8me international dans l\u2019art plastique ainsi que dans la po\u00e9sie. Lorsque Jespers avait utilis\u00e9 deux tout petits pots de peinture pour peindre l\u2019une des jambes du Jongleur\u00a0en vert et l\u2019autre en bleu, son unique explication \u00e9tait\u00a0: \u2018La sculpture en a besoin\u2019. Pendant les ann\u00e9es vingt, il adorait s\u2019imposer l\u2019une ou l\u2019autre restriction s\u00e9v\u00e8re. C\u2019\u00e9tait, entre autres, le cas en 1925, lorsqu\u2019il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 <em>Het toilet<\/em> (La toilette) \u00e0 partir d\u2019un vieux seuil en pierre dure appartenant \u00e0 une \u00e9glise d\u2019Ostende. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une figure f\u00e9minine monumentale avec \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re le motif d\u2019une r\u00e9p\u00e9tition lyrique, presque musicale. Suite \u00e0 la pr\u00e9dilection de l\u2019artiste pour cette pierre dure belge, une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 calcaire dont il se servira durant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, son atelier a longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 empreint de la tr\u00e8s d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able odeur provoqu\u00e9e par la taille de cette pierre. Il r\u00e9ussit m\u00eame \u00e0 connecter ses \u0153uvres avec son admiration pour le tr\u00e8s statique art sculptural \u00e9gyptien. Ainsi, pour <em>Kleine ruiter<\/em> (Le petit cavalier), il a con\u00e7u l\u2019\u0153il de la m\u00e8re et de l\u2019enfant comme si les personnages \u00e9taient de face, tandis qu\u2019ils sont tous deux pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s de profil, un choix artistique que l\u2019on retrouve dans les hi\u00e9roglyphes. De m\u00eame, la coiffure de la m\u00e8re rappelle les perruques des courtisans \u00e9gyptiens. Le travail d\u00e9coratif de l\u2019ensemble de la surface et la stylisation des formes qui ressortent de cette \u0153uvre sont \u00e9galement caract\u00e9ristiques de l\u2019art d\u00e9co.\u2028De m\u00eame, <em>Engel<\/em> (Ange), sculpture tombale r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 1927 pour la tombe d\u2019Ana\u00efs Franck au cimeti\u00e8re Schoonselhof \u00e0 Anvers, pr\u00e9sente des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de l\u2019art d\u00e9co, avec le haut du torse rallong\u00e9, le bas du torse raccourci, le haut des bras raccourci et les avant-bras rallong\u00e9s. La mani\u00e8re dont la t\u00eate d\u00e9pit\u00e9e repose sur l\u2019\u00e9paule offre une expression extr\u00eamement stylis\u00e9e dans la meilleure tradition de l\u2019art d\u00e9co.<\/div><div Le 14 d\u00e9cembre de cette m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, Oscar et Mia ont perdu leur unique enfant Hella en l\u2019espace de quelques heures seulement. Cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement tragique a pouss\u00e9 l\u2019artiste \u00e0 rechercher, comme il l\u2019a exprim\u00e9 lui-m\u00eame, \u2018plus d\u2019humanit\u00e9\u2019 dans son \u0153uvre. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 soutenu dans cette recherche par ses amis, les peintres expressionnistes Gustave De Smet (1877-1943) et Constant Permeke (1886-1952). Les th\u00e8mes des expressionnistes flamands sont : l\u2019amour de la vie, la naissance, la croissance, et, dans une moindre mesure, leur contraire\u00a0: la mort. Ce contenu \u00e0 orientation positive se refl\u00e8te aussi dans la th\u00e9matique des sculptures expressionnistes de Jespers, portant des noms tels que <em>Geboorte<\/em> (Naissance)\u00a0et\u00a0<em>Moederschap<\/em> (Maternit\u00e9).\u00a0De m\u00eame, son \u0153uvre portant le titre <em>De bekoring van Sint Antonius<\/em> (La tentation de Saint-Antoine) et qui se trouve au Museum of Modern Art \u00e0 New York, respire d\u2019abord les valeurs existentielles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Geboorte<\/em> (Naissance),\u00a0taill\u00e9 en 1932 dans la pierre dure belge, la pierre que Jespers choisissait pour la plupart de ses sculptures expressionnistes, est inspir\u00e9 par la naissance de Paul, l\u2019unique fils d\u2019Oscar. La forte expression survient par la juxtaposition des formes arrondies du ventre et des seins, et aussi par la repr\u00e9sentation angulaire des genoux, bras et mains. Elle ressort \u00e9galement du fait que, pendant l\u2019accouchement, la femme est oblig\u00e9e de se servir de son immense main afin de repousser la suggestion du cri de douleur. L\u2019argile \u00e9tait une alternative possible. Au moyen d\u2019un fil, Oscar Jespers coupait une tranche d\u2019un cube en argile et la modelait en rond. Le bras et la jambe recevaient ainsi leur forme creuse, ce qui \u00e9tait requis pour la cuisson. L\u2019une des figures les plus d\u00e9pouill\u00e9es con\u00e7ues de cette fa\u00e7on \u00e9tait\u00a0Puret\u00e9, 78 cm de hauteur, cr\u00e9\u00e9e en 1945. Plus tard, il fera \u00e9galement couler un bronze de cette \u0153uvre. En 1927-28, il avait taill\u00e9 une <em>Babykop<\/em> (T&ecirc;te de b\u00e9b\u00e9)\u00a0en marbre blanc. Ici, la rondeur soutenue symbolisait la singularit\u00e9 de la nouvelle vie. En 1942, il a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 caract\u00e9riser la t\u00eate de son fils\u00a0<em>Paul<\/em> \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de treize ans\u00a0: une jeune vie, pr\u00e9sentant d\u00e9j\u00e0 le germe de tous ses talents futurs. La chevelure forme un casque, comme dans les sculptures archa\u00efques grecques. La t\u00eate de son petit-fils <em>St\u00e9phane<\/em>, une sculpture en marbre blanc de 1960, se situe entre ces deux \u0153uvres.
